On the 28th of November 2021, Al Jazeera had an opportunity to interview the United Nations Security Council delegates of the United States of America and the Russian Federation. The representatives attended committee sessions about the conflict in the region of Donbass-Donetsk. This area is located in Ukraine, and they will seek independence.

The delegate of the USA explained that they would make a committee called Ukraine Peacebuilding Department (UPBD). This body will report human rights violations in the area and political opinion. The USA said, “ We [prefer] the peace instead of the referendum since the referendum boosts the idea of the extremism in the area.”

The delegate of the USA also commented, “We do not see the visibility of the referendum because Russian [Federation]’s intervention is still there. If they want to put the self-determination principle, the interference must be gone.”

A question asked by another journalist to the USA, which was about a solution other than a referendum. The delegate of the USA explained, “We are going to_ provide a mechanism for you to voice your opinion and provide aid.”

James Bays from Al Jazeera asked the Russian Federation about their intervention by sending troops to the border. Russia answered, “There is a 2000 long land border between Ukraine and Russia, and [we] would like to ensure what is going on the other side of the border.”
